Trying.

"Do or do not, there is no try." - Yoda

I hate this quote. I hate all quotes that relate to this (example : The only people who never fail are those who never try). I don't believe in it one bit. How is this even true? Can you honestly say that with everything that's happened to you, you never tried?

I'm horrible at math. I would be up until 12am studying for tests, or even doing a ten problem homework assignment. We'd usually get the even problems only, so I did the odd ones for practice. I'd go to class early for tutoring. I'd ask people who were passing the class to help me. I'd go to bed tired, but pretty optimistic that I'd do well on the test. And then I'd fail.

Can you tell me I didn't try?

I certainly didn't pass, but I didn't NOT fucking try, either.
(That is just an example by the way, not a rant about a math test.)

You can't tell someone who gave their all for something that they didn't try.
They failed, so what, that doesn't mean they didn't put in any fucking effort to succeed.

  1. I know. I have never successfully made myself feel better by saying 'at least I tried'.
Its worse! If you tried really hard, then failing is even a bigger failure, because if you didn't try, at least you can tell yourself its because you didn't try?
    arrrgghhh!

  2. "At least I tried" is better than "I didn't do anything." And when I've given my best, and someone has the audacity to say that trying isn't an option, or that there's no such thing, bluntly, I want to punch them in the face.

When someone says I tried, it makes me feel like they acknowledge what I did, even if it wasn't successful.

  3. Fully agreed, stupid saying. I try new things often and regularly fail therefore I don't do. I think I get points for trying!

“The men who try to do something and fail are infinitely better than those who try nothing and succeed”

“The successful man will profit from his mistakes and try again in a different way.”

“You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try.”
